Notice: About DDLs

Unless you have been living under a rock in the last two weeks, it won’t have escaped your attention that Megaupload got pwned by the Feds, and as a result, file hosting services have been falling like dominoes all over the internet. Fileserve no longer pay, and our account on there have been disabled for violation of T&C (lol). Filesonic commited suicide by stopping their sharing services. Your files can only be accessed by yourself only, now.

So anyway, I will think about how to proceed from here. For a week or so, we will not have any DDLs.

We will either have to find another file hosting service, drop a server, use ads, or increase donations (which I don’t really want to do).

Banner Competition: Winter Edition

Competition

Edit: Submissions now closed. I’ll be gathering the banners i’m missing when I get home later today!

Okay, since we are only getting Jigsy’s cock as an entry, we have decided to swap it to a banner competition, since it’s about time we got some new banners.

The number of banners we pick will be proportional to the number of submitted entries. There will be one Grand Winner, who will receive a prize.

And here are the technical criteria for the submitted banners:

  • 1240px x 250px
  • .jpg or .png (preferred)
  • Filesize should be reasonable.

And here are the criteria for characters/shows:

  • Character(s) should be female.
  • Banner must be SFW. No nudity/genitalia/hentai/etc.
  • Character(s) should come from a show that Doki has done/is doing/plans to do. This includes the wishlist.
  • The banner should include the words “Doki Fansubs” somewhere on it.

Good luck.

Just some advice, the best banners not only has good design, but the logo “Doki Fansubs” also “fits” the banner, ie, it doesn’t stand out. I’ll keep this open til the weekend, i think. Keep them coming!

Rules:

  • Submit by replying to this post, 1 link to a banner per reply.
  • If you want to claim the prize, be sure to use your real email in the comment submission, so we can contact you. If you don’t use Steam, you may transfer your prize to a person of your choice.
  • Grand Winner will be chosen by Doki staff members.
  • Competition will end at midnight 31/1/2012 GMT.
  • Prize must be claimed/used within a week of competition ending.
  • Any prize money left over after purchase will be none transferable.

Prize:

Steam game(s) of your choice up to the value of $25 (no alternative prize available).

Prize funded by staff members, before people accuse me of using donation money (which I have no access to).

Disclaimer:

May update rules a bit later…

Recruiting Translators

Recruiting Image Editors

We’re recruiting a few Japanese > English translators for new shows next season.

Previous fansubbing experience is not necessary. You should have a reasonable level of English, and have good experience with Japanese. To elaborate, you should have been speaking Japanese for a number of years, and for those of you who may have specific qualifications, the average fansub translator is a JLPT3, though this qualification can’t account for cultural knowledge, etc.

If you believe you’re up to the task, you can join #doki-recruits on irc.rizon.net.

Alternatively, you can email me at nagato-is-my-waifu@hotmail.com. Make sure your email is detailed.

Recruiting a Translator

I am looking for a Japanese -> English translator, for next season’s TV shows.

Previous experience in fansubbing not necessary, but experience in Japanese is necessary.

If you can help out, please apply by emailing me at misteranonimous@gmail.com

Discussion: 10-bit h264

(Pic not related)

Remember the transition from XviD to h264? Well, soon, 10-bit h264 will replace 8-bit h264.

Advantages
Without going into encoder speak, 10-bit h264 can achieve a same level of quality as 8-bit h264, but at a lower filesize.

Disadvantages
10-bit h264 is not widely supported yet.

More info on 10-bit h264 | More | More

This is simply a discussion your opinions of 10-bit h264.

Recruiting Editors (Closed)

Recruiting editors. You must be available from 6pm onwards (utc/UK time) or in the afternoon -> evening (US time) on Thursdays.

Your level of English should be high (native speaker level). Your job is to turn an Engrishy/clunky/awkward script into fluent/natural English. This means altering the flow of lines so they read better and flow off of the tongue, without changing the overall meaning. Not all translators’ first languages are English and therefore many scripts require extensive editing before they can become release ready.

Send me an email at misteranonimous@gmail.com and join #doki-recruits@irc.rizon.net. In your email, state your timezone and any info you feel supports your application. Previous experience in fansubbing is not a requirement.

After sending me an email, join #doki-recruits@irc.rizon.net. Ask for the test. Do the test. Email me with the complete test.

I am looking for dedicated people, those who will stick around for at least a season. Don’t bother if you are going to lose interest in 2 weeks.

Edit: Recruitment is closed again.

To all those who sent me the completed test: I will look at them and email you feedback. Be patient.

Recruiting Timers (Closed)

Despite recruiting many timers half a year a year ago, some have disappeared and some are generally inactive. Only a couple remain active, and as a result, I am looking to train another set of timers.

So if you are thinking of getting into fansubbing, but don’t know how to do anything, here is a good opportunity.

If you would like to learn how to time, you should satisfy the following conditions.

  • A lot of patience. Timing can be very monotonous and tedious.
  • Speak coherent English. If I can’t communicate with you properly, I can’t teach you.
  • Ability to take initiative. If you have nothing to do, ask me for something to work on.Don’t just sit there waiting.
  • Have a lot of free time. If you are only available for two days a week, this gig is not suitable for you. While I don’t expect you to be online 24/7, I would expect you to be around for a couple of hours at least 4 or 5 days a week.
  • Able to idle on IRC when you are online. If you can idle 24/7, then all the better.

No experience required. You will be taught everything. I am looking for people all over the world, but in the utc+7 to utc+12 timezones (Far East and Australia) in particular, as I lack timers from that side of the world.

Please email me with a little info about yourself, then join #doki-recruits if you are interested.

Edit: Recruitment is closed. Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest!

Valkyria Chronicles 3 Raw

Ibuki from Hoshikaka is mad because she can’t find the raw for Valkyria Chronicles 3: For Whom Do I Bear that Gunshot Wound.

Apparently a Russian group called RHT had released it a while ago. I have waited until now to ask for it, and I don’t have any high hopes of finding it. The first episode is said to be available on PSN. So if anyone of you knows where to get that raw, do inform us about it. Translations/timing/editing and QC has already been done. All that’s left are the theme songs which I will get to it soon enough.

In the meantime, enjoy our releases and have a nice day :)

EDIT: The BDs won’t be out until 29 June. It will take at least a few weeks before it will be available on the usual sharing sites. This would mean a possible delay of the release till late July or even early August if we can’t find the raw.

Looking for Translators

So, translators are once again disappearing on me. Back-up translators are stepping up to fill in, so none of the airing shows are significantly affected. But I would like to recruit some more translators just in case. If you would like to join us and translate a show for us next season, you can also apply. I am looking to pick up 5-8 shows, depending on availability of translators.

Typical requirements are: able to spare a few hours a week to translate, ability to translate by ear (closed captions are provided on certain shows). If you don’t think your Japanese is good enough, don’t be afraid to apply. You never know, you might be right for the job.

Please join #doki-recruits and email me (misteranonimous@gmail.com) with some information about yourself.
